Grant to help abuse victims with finances

Local domestic abuse victims will get help learning how to be financially self-sufficient, thanks to a grant.

Harbor House executive director Beth Schnorr says all too often, women stay in abusive relationships because they can't afford to leave. She says it's tough for some to become independent, because they may have limited education, job skills, and a lack of confidence.

Schnorr says the three-year, $145,000 grant will let their group go beyond what they've done before. She says their full-time economic advocate will help women get better jobs, so they can become financially independent.

The grant is from the Basic Needs Giving Partnership, through the Community Foundation for the Fox Valley Region.

Schnorr says they're going to work with the Housing Partnership of the Fox Cities, and COTS, on the program.
