Anti-smoking groups don't like smoker surcharge
A proposed $50-a-month health insurance surcharge for state workers who smoke isn't sitting well with anti-smoking groups.
Governor Walker included the plan in his budget proposal.
The American Lung Association is among the groups speaking out against the idea. Spokeswoman Dona Wininsky says cigarette taxes are a good deterrent, but she worries that increasing health insurance costs will lead smokers to either drop their insurance, or take a cheaper policy. Wininsky says the proposal would also disproportionately impact the poor.
A department of administration spokeswoman says smokers are more expensive to insure, and the governor's proposal would save the state $2.7 million over two years.
