Appleton firefighters busier in 2012
Appleton's fire trucks were out on city streets a little more often in 2012.
The department saw a five percent increase in total calls, topping 3,700. There were 129 fires, including 38 in buildings. The total number of fires was up over 2011, but eight percent below the nine-year average.
Firefighters also responded to nearly 2,400 EMS and rescue calls, and that's up eight percent from 2011.
Lt. Chris Fischer is a spokesman for the department, and he says they worked with dispatchers to reduce response times to emergency medical situations by 30 seconds. He says they only receive minimal information about the most serious calls, before they leave, so they can get out the door faster.
Fischer worked on the department's annual report, and he made a presentation yesterday afternoon, to the city's safety and licensing committee.
