Lasee wants local control over wind farms

It would be more difficult to build a wind farm in Wisconsin, if a local lawmaker gets his way.

Sen. Frank Lasee wants to give local governments control of where wind turbines can go up. The state took that power away several years ago, when counties and towns started creating restrictive setback requirements that essentially banned the wind towers.

Lasee says he knows of several local families who had to leave their homes, because the low-level noise from the turbines made them sick. He says local officials should be able to set appropriate setbacks, but they need to justify their actions.

Power companies asked for statewide standards for wind turbine siting, so they don't have to deal with a patchwork of local regulations.
