Ellis thinks vouchers will be out of budget
It's unlikely that Governor Walker's proposed expansion
of school vouchers will stay in the budget.
That's the feeling of Senate President Mike Ellis. The Neenah Republican says a majority of GOP senators can't support the plan right now.
Ellis says that doesn't mean that a majority don't support vouchers. He says some senators don't want it in the budget, because they want to give communities a chance to talk about it. He says others don't mind that it's in the budget, but they don't like the plan.
Republicans hold an 18-to-15 majority in the Senate.
Ellis has been an outspoken opponent of the governor's proposal, because it doesn't give voters a chance to weigh in, through a referendum, before vouchers would be expanded to a new district.
