No Appleton teachers will get layoff notices

The Appleton school district won't be handing out any preliminary layoff notices to teachers this spring.

Personnel director Mark Huenink says it's the first time in recent years that it won't happen.

He says they moved up the retirement notification date, and they believe retirees will offset any reduction in positions. Huenink says they used to have to issue the notices, and keep some teachers in limbo, for at least a few months.

Last year, the district had to cut one teacher's full-time position, by 0.2. In 2011, 20 teachers received preliminary notices. Huenink says high school enrollment had been declining in the past.
