NWS bringing new alerts to state

It may not seem like it today, but winter weather warnings will soon be replaced by summer severe weather. And when that happens, the National Weather Service will send out more detailed information.

Meteorologist Jeff Last works at the weather service's Green Bay office. He says they decided to try the new format, on a trial basis, after a massive tornado devastated Joplin, Mo. in 2011. Last says many people ignored the warnings back then, because they didn't think the storm was too serious.

He says the new warnings will put a storm in perspective, by including the potential damage to trees, homes and mobile homes.

He says they can also issue a "tornado emergency" for a storm that could devastate a community.

The new warnings are being tested this year in the Great Lakes and Great Plains regions.
