State's leadership setup for education rare

The leadership setup for the state's K-12 education system is unique.

A report from the Wisconsin Taxpayers Alliance shows the state is the only one in the country that elects a superintendent of schools, and doesn't have a statewide school board.

Researcher Dale Knapp says Minnesota is the only other state that doesn't have a board. He says New Mexico's is just an advisory panel.

Knapp says 14 states elect their school superintendent, and in the rest, the governor typically appoints an education leader. He says an elected superintendent isn't always on the same page with the governor and Legislature, and that can lead to a disconnect.

The state superintendent of schools position is on the April 2 ballot. Incumbent Tony Evers takes on Republican Representative Don Pridemore of Hartford.
