Appleton skating rinks closed, despite cold
It feels like a mid-January day today, but the ice rinks in Appleton's parks are closed.
Kabel Helmbrecht of the city parks department says they stop maintaining the rinks at the end of February, because as the sun gets higher in the sky, they're harder to maintain. He says parks crews are now focusing on spring and summer activities.
Helmbrecht says they try to stretch the rink maintenance budget as far as they can, but once we get a few rain showers, it's increasingly difficult to keep them in good shape.
