Bear!

Tuesday, Jul, 22 2014

Maybe you've heard me relate the bear story on WHBY. If not, here it is:

On vacation a week or so ago, we were on a popular trail in Montana. We had just crossed a creek and I was walking just 10-12 yards ahead of my wife, Shelly, when she yells out "Dave, stop!"  I'm thinking it must be a deer or something else that won't tear my arm off...but no, she blurts out "bear", turns and takes off!  Yep, nothing but dust!  Her hat goes flying and she's not going back for it!

So, there I am...and to retreat back down the trail, I have to go past where she saw this black bear.  I start fast-walking, which may not be the best way to get away from a bear, but it worked for me!  I fetched Shell's hat and continued trekking back down the trail.  I did not personally spot the bear, but she says there was NO DOUBT ABOUT IT!!   Claims it was about 20 yards to the left of the trail... So, we finish heading back, making sure to mention our spotting to all that were heading up the trail at the time.

Guess what we bought at the local hardware store the next day?  Yep, bear spray.  The nastiest, most foul stuff you could shoot at a bear short of a howitzer.  It's now my constant companion on hikes, even though I have heard that some people are attacked despite hitting the bear with this nasty spray.  If they're angry or hungry enough, nothing will stop them.

Oh, didn't mention that that was 20 minutes into our very first hike of the vacation.  Imagine how our heads were on swivels for the rest of the week!!

Casey Kasem

Monday, Jun, 16 2014

Sorry to hear of the passing of Casey Kasem at 82.  Even more sorry to hear of all the Kasem family issues that dominated the news in the past few months. Put your petty problems aside and let the man die with dignity....

Casey retired in 2009, but apparantly had both Parkinson's and a form of dementia.

I mentioned on WHBY this morning of my love of his American Top 40 show, especially in my young years of the 70's and 80's, when Casey was in his heyday.  I used to sneak my old radio into bed with me as a kid, keep it down low so I could hear it, and hopefully Mom wouldn't, otherwise my radio was gone!  To hear Casey count down the hits, with anticipation of what the number one record(yes, record!) was that week is still a great childhood memory.

Rest in peace Casey, and we'll keep reaching for the stars....

Tooting our own horn!

Monday, May, 5 2014

Saturday night in Middleton, it was Wisconsin Broadcasters Association awards night!  400 broadcasters and guests....huge turnout. Biggest in the country, apparently.

WHBY won 4 first place awards, 11 other 2nd and 3rd place awards, then to cap the night, the Medium Market Station of the Year award as well, our 2nd in the past 3 years!!  It was a great night, and a big congrats to all the winners.

Packers schedule

Thursday, Apr, 24 2014

It's out...and it should be fun!

Tough start though, with 3 out of the first 4 on the road, including the big-time opener with the SB champs, the Seahawks in Seattle. The Lambeau grass gets a break as there's just one home game in September.

I like the placement of the bye week, about mid-schedule. Then, it's 7 of the last 8 games in Packer-like weather--outdoors in the cool or cold! Just the one warmie in Tampa, and remember that the Vikes play outside for two years while their new dome gets built.

Plenty of big-time exposure, too. 5 prime time games, plus a feature showdown with New England late in the year.  Good schedule...plenty of big games, and all of them on WHBY starting August 9th!!

Final Four, baby!

Friday, Apr, 4 2014

Gut feeling, not my heart talking here!  I am going to go with Wisconsin to knock off Kentucky in a thriller, 71-68, and Florida to slowly stretch it to a 74-64 win over UConn.  Bo's team has to assert and force this into their game, not Kentucky's. Hit some three's, get Kaminsky rolling and make sure Nigel Hayes gets plenty of minutes!

See you Monday morning and we'll talk about the Badger-Gator final!

Go Bucky!
