I give you, the "Tailly"

Friday, Jan, 4 2013

There it is in all its glory....

The "Tailly"

Today on the PhilCast we'll talk about this goofy thing that actually gives humans a tail that wags based on how you're feeling.

Yup...
It's wired right to you.

You're happy....you like someone....it picks up on that and starts to wag. That guy you meet at a bar is more annoying than interesting? He'll get a clue right away because your tail wouldn't be wagging with joy.

You can't make this stuff up.

Suspended for making a finger gun

Thursday, Jan, 3 2013

This is what he did.
A six-year-old boy in Maryland was suspended from school because he made this gesture to another kid.

Somehow this rings of insane to me. Suspended?

Yet in the bigger picture, I guess it's mostly sad to me. It's sad to think that something this simple done by a little boy at school could lead to such a serious reaction. Sad to me that maybe, just maybe we've gotten to the point in our society where things like this once innocent gesture now need to be taken seriously.

We'll discuss on the Thursday PhilCast.

Plus, the latest TV technology. It promises to be the best picture yet coming from the thinnest screen yet. But will you be willing to pay over $10,000 to get it?
Yikes.

And 4:30-ish Lips LaBelle drops by to talk Hollywood news and gossip.
I've got one tidbit about Ann Curry today myself.

Weigh-In Wednesdays

Wednesday, Jan, 2 2013

This is a big time of year for fitness clubs and sellers of exercise equipment.

All those well-meaning new year's resolutions to lose weight and get in shape kick in today.

Most will give it a go until at least this weekend before giving up!

Here at the PhilCast there is a tradition called "Weigh-In Wednesdays" when I check in on any progress made in this valiant effort.

Between now and Easter I like to at least attempt to lose some holiday pounds and get back into some regular habit of exercise on a daily basis. Then each Wednesday we check to see if we lost any weight. We. You're invited to take part. Just keep track and send me an email on Wednesdays before the show and I'll read how YOU are doing too.

I find a couple of things help doing this. One is to be accountable to the report on the show each week. I know I'm going to have to say something about the effort every Wednesday so I better have something to say!

And two, it helps to share this info and to write it down as well.
I'm not sure why that's the case, but it is.

So feel free to join me and report your progress to me.

My strategy to drop at least 10 pounds is as follows:

1. I go cold turkey on the Christmas cookies and sweets in general. This one is not that difficult to me. At this point if I don't see another pecan finger for a year I'm good with that.

2. Eat a little smarter. Gone are the pizzas, burgers and fries. Hello the occasional salad, veggies and fruit.

3. Eat a little less. This is a tough one for me. Try not to automatically go for seconds at dinner...and no TV snack at 9:00 at night either. (ouch)

4. Drink lots of water. And if you didn't know it, here's a tip...drink a big glass of water right before you eat a meal. It tricks you into thinking you're not as hungry.

5. Back to exercise. I've always used this as a way to ramp up to getting into bike riding shape for spring. So I try to spin on the trainer for 30 minutes 4-5 days a week as of now. Pick what you like to do. It doesn't have to be a lot. Just make sure you make a routine of actually doing it almost every day, be it a walk, sit-ups, a jog, a bike, a stair machine...whatever. You don't need some fancy gym...just a plan and determination to move that body around!

Today in the 3:00 hour I'll go over the Weigh-In Wednesday facts and figures. Meantime, time for me to stop talking about it and start doing it. Are you in with me?

Full PhilCast on New Year's Eve

Tuesday, Jan, 1 2013

Yes, there will be a full PhilCast show on New Year's Eve, so give us a listen as you make preparations to say goodbye to 2012.

I have some great audio pieces to play for you today in the 3-4 hour of the show, looking back at the top stories of the year, remembering those we lost in 2012 and going over the odd Wisconsin stories of the year as well.

Then from 4-5 Rich Ratay will be in the studio with me for Pack Yak, as we break down the playoffs and the Packers chances as Green Bay heads into Wild Card Weekend.

Don't forget to sign up to participate in the PFL.

No skill required. Just come up with your team name, sign up, and play along through the Super Bowl. The winner will be the person who scores the most points. This is our third year of doing this and it makes the playoffs even more fun to follow.

Winner will be in for a PFL Champion PC sweatshirt and more!

Just CLICK HERE to sign up this week before the playoffs start.

PFL Commish "Jordan the Chicago Cheesehead" will be on today at about 4:45-ish during Pack Yak to talk more about how it all works.

Shovel shopping

Friday, Dec, 28 2012

I went shovel shopping, not something you do every year.
Today on the PhilCast I'll cover all the things to be considered when buying a new snow shovel, right down to feeling the need to take it for a 'test drive' in the store.

Have you shovel shopped lately?
It's not easy.

There are a lot of choices at a lot of different price points. I saw a shovel that cost $60.00!
You can probably guess that that's not the one I ended up buying.

I made my choice based on the combination of price and features, of which, I feel my new shovel has at least four features I liked:

1. Long handle.
I noticed some of them had handles so short they must have been made by back doctors so that you hurt your back and have to go see them to fix it.

2. Angle on the handle loop
I liked this feature. The loop at the end of the handle for your hand (oh, some shovels don't even have a loop...they just have a stick handle that ends up there) has an angle to it, which fits the way you hold the thing to throw the snow.

3. Rubber grip thingy
About midway down the handle there is a foam-rubber-type section of material to grab on to. Nice.

4. Heavy metal shovel head strip
This is important. Many of the plastic shovels had no such strip along the edge. Come on, how long is that going to last? In a battle of snow and ice versus plastic, well, plastic alone ain't gonna cut it. This one has an entire metal plate bolted on down there.

And speaking of bolted....
I guess I could go #5 here...the handle is fixed to the head with THREE bolts, not one, like the one that just broke on me after only a couple of seasons of use.

So I have a new shovel in place and ready to go. I'll have to write a review after actually using it for the first time.
