Tornadoes in Oklahoma

The vicious twister that hit Moore has left destruction and death unlike most that we witness. Some areas of town are almost unrecognizable.

My one close-up experience with a tornado was back in the 80's in Minneapolis. A big twister was racing across the metro, and after chewing up our neighborhood, we caught a break as it lifted just a bit before touching back down and destroying parts of town. We could hear the monster roar that many equate with a freight train going over your head. After it passed, we saw hundreds of trees down, numerous homes, businesses and apartments damaged, a city bus thrown into a building...but, we were alive.

Our prayers go out to those affected by this tragedy.

Vacation notes

A few thoughts from these past few days while on my vacation. And no, I won't show slides.

The beach and 80 degrees is a wonderful thing, especially when it's in the 40's back here. I did bring back some warm weather, though....

Paid 3.19 a gallon for gas where we were...saw 3.74 per gallon upon return. Yuck!

There's a ton of construction going on in Milwaukee, too. They enjoy orange barrels almost as much as we do.

Shucking oysters is not as easy as it appears! Especially when the ones I was shucking were as big as your fist! Good eating, though...with tabasco and a squeeze of lemon!

You can tan too much! Saw a lady who would have given "Tan Mom" a run for her money. Her skin was so dark and....leathery!

While raking my yard these past few days, I noticed a considerable amount of winter kill. It was a tough winter, and there were a few times when part of my yard was exposed to the bitter cold and the elements. I did see a nice bounce-back already after just one or two showers this week, so with some sun, rain and fertilizer, we should be in better shape.

Couldn't help but notice on Monday the weather chart that showed the start of this spring is one of the coldest on record, after one of the warmest last year. Talk about being on polar ends of the scale!

Happy May Day coming up!

Thursday night, the NFL finally releases the schedule for the 2013 season. Care to guess on the Packers opener? I'm going to say it will be RG3 trying to rehab his knee in time for a late Sunday afternoon game for the Redskins at Lambeau against the Pack! We'll find out Thursday night!

Gun control measures

It looks like most of the gun control momentum that arose following the tragedy at Sandy Hook in Newtown has diminished greatly. Though no one measure can prevent a repeat of that horrible day, making any strides towards keeping weapons out of the hands of dangerous people is at least a step in the right direction. The universal background check measure may pass, but outlawing assault-type weapons and limiting the size of clips looks certain to fail. Too bad.

I have no issue with law-abiding citizens owning a weapon. But, I fail to see the need for anyone outside of our military to possess an assault-style rifle that can shoot 20, 30 or more bullets from one magazine.

It's fairly clear that many legislators on the Hill have realized just how many campaign dollars they will lose if they support any further gun control. Even as the majority of their constituents want this legislation to become law. Too bad.

We all cringed when we saw Kevin Ware's horrific injury during the Louisville-Duke game on the weekend. Good to hear that the surgery went well and he's already up and walking with the aid of crutches. Ware's directive to his team came through---the guys went out and won it in the second half, and the Final Four looms this weekend.

I will never forget how I felt when I had major knee surgery when I was 16. I had ripped up my knee playing basketball, and the surgery was to repair the torn cartilage--big, ugly 10-inch cut! Yes, before the days of arthroscopic surgery!! The truly memorable moment was post-surgery when the PT person came in and said that it was time to get up and work the new knee! That first time that you elevate and the blood rushes to the knee is a pain you will never, ever forget! I mentioned on the air Tuesday that it's like your grandmother jamming her crochet needles into your knee!! Yikes!

Quick thoughts on NCAA hoops:

Sorry to see the Green Bay women bounced in round one to LSU, on their home court. The NCAA's handling of home court advantage in women's basketball is atrocious. It's all about ticket sales...the big just keep getting bigger.

Speaking of Bigs, the GB women were really weak in the post last night. Too many outside shots will catch up with you.

On the Men's side, wow, this could get crazy. From Florida Gulf Coast, the first #15 seed to make the Sweet Sixteen, to a #13 seed, Lasalle. Three of the four #1 seeds are still alive. I lost my bracket favorite, Georgetown, right out of the gates! Louisville, Kansas, Miami and Ohio State are my picks now--good luck!

What a fascinating process, this search for a new Pope! Admittedly, I am not Catholic, but the whole process is amazing. What other nominating/selection/election process is anything like it?

First, we get this exclusive group of cardinals together, close the doors, lock the windows, take away their cellphones and require them to pray for guidance on which among them they should vote for. Then, they scribble their vote on a peice of paper, and one by one, walk it up to the ballot box. Three people count the votes and burn them immediately, with black smoke if no one gets the required votes, and white if the new Pope is found! Wow!

There's just nothing quite like it, to see people watching a smoke stack to see what color the smoke might be!

Keep an ear to WHBY, as we will break in with coverage once the smoke goes white.

Ever notice how rotten it is...to feel rotten?! I was laid up for a couple of days with a stomach bug--knocked me out of commision for a few days. It sucks to get sick! What a waste of time!

OK, you have to stay down for a day or two and let it finish beating you up. But, I rarely get sick, and lounging around like a sloth is not my favorite thing. TV stinks, ESPN repeats everything they do 90 times a day, and as attractive as Giada is on Food Network, I'm just not hungry right now!

Plus, I was supposed to attend a conference in Washington D.C., and thanks to my bug, and lousy weather, that's not happening this year. Oh well....at least I dropped 5 pounds in the last few days. The hard way.

OK, now I know I've had it with February. I broke my favorite shovel.

Sure, I snowthrow when I can, but when it's just that inch or two, or maybe it's time to scrape off some packed down snow, this baby could cut it. Big, strong, kinda heavy, but it could gnaw through the nastiest chowder. My wife never used it because it was too heavy, so it was all mine! Sure enough, snapped the handle right down at the base where it attaches to the big, heavy pusher blade. It lived a good life and tossed a few zillion pounds of snow through many a winter. Great time to replace a shovel, at the end of a relentless month of snow. Wish me luck, or some advice on who has these type of shovels anymore!

1. The Vikings just aren't the same outside of the comfy Metrodome. Take away the home crowd and the climate control, and The Vikes just don't cut it outdoors. Plus, it will be about 19 degrees at kickoff.

2. The Packers adjusted very well after the slow start in Minny. Don't come out rusty on Saturday night and the Vikes will be in trouble.

3. Adrian Peterson can't do this again....can he?

Saw Phil Cianciola's blog mention of his very first Tom & Jerry I remember mine, but I was quite young!

My Dad was hosting a holiday party at the house, dozens of people, most I didn' t know! So, there's Dad making these goofy drinks with this frothy gunk at the top of the glass. I noticed he was also adding some booze to the glass, so I knew that wasn't going to be offered my way! Dad makes me what essentially was hot cocoa with the frothy gunk, now known as Tom & Jerry batter. Hey, not bad! As I grew a bit older, Mom snuck me one with just a hint of Creme De Cacao in it, and I was hooked!

Now, we enjoy a Tom & Jerry or two during the holiday season, often to pay tribute to loved ones we have lost through the years. Plus, they taste so good!
