A federal judge is striking down early-voting restrictions that Majority Republicans put in place, and a government watchdog says it’s not a surprise.
The limits were part of last month’s lame-duck session.
Judge James Peterson ruled the law violates injunctions he issued in 2016, for a lawsuit over similar early-voting limits.
Jay Heck of Common Cause says the Legislature and Republicans shouldn’t be determining who should be voting and when. He says it should be up to local communities to decide if they have the capacity to offer early voting.
The law from Republicans limited early voting to two weeks before an election.
Pending an appeal, the ruling means early voting will be allowed 47 days before a federal election, and 21 days before a state one.
