The dates for a special election for Congress in northern Wisconsin are going to change.
Wisconsin Elections Commission spokesman Reid Magney says ones Governor Evers chose don’t comply with a federal law that requires a 45-day window between the primary and general election. That rule is in place to give military and overseas voters enough time to get their absentee ballots.
Magney says the state hasn’t had an opening for a federal office since the law took effect in 2010. He says lawmakers did change the timeline of the fall elections, to comply. That meant moving the primary from September to August.
Last week, Evers set the primary for December 30th and the general election on January 27th to replace former Republican Congressman Sean Duffy in the seventh district. Those dates were among the options the elections commission put together.
