A controversial sculpture in Appleton isn’t going anywhere.
The city council voted 7-6 to keep “The Collective” at its current spot, on the west end of the College Avenue Bridge.
Ald. Denise Fenton fears the city would have nothing but bland, meaningless art, if council members would “succumb to the pressures of the lowest common denominitor.” She doesn’t think it would set a good precedent.
The council debated the issue for several months, after neighbors complained they didn’t know about the sculpture, before it went in.
The city since changed the notification process.
The head of Sculpture Valley was working to find different locations on private land, nearby.
Now it’s scheduled to stay by the bridge, for the full two years.
