Students won’t be back in classrooms when the upcoming year starts in the Appleton school district.
The school board agreed unanimously to have all virtual learning, because of the spread of coronavirus.
Board President Kay Eggert says she wants her grandchildren to be back in school, but she can’t ignore the epidemiology.
Board member Barry O’Connor is concerned that kids would spread the virus. He says they could be asymptomatic, and give it to their parents and grandparents, and the community’s numbers could grow even more.
O’Connor says other countries had lower rates when they reopened their schools, and he doesn’t want the district’s kids to be the experimental kids.
The board voted three weeks ago to open the year, with most students spending two days in the classroom each week, and the rest online.
Since then, Appleton has been in the “high” category for COVID-19.
The board plans to move to the hybrid system once the trends go down for three straight weeks.
Eggert is pleading with the community to help prevent the spread, so kids can return to school.
