MADISON, WI — Douglas La Follette announces his resignation as Wisconsin Secretary of State just three months into his 11th term in office. The 82-year-old La Follette, who was first elected Secretary of State in 1974, has seen his powers over elections gradually erode. Republican majorities in the Assembly and Senate have been working to further shift election oversight from the office. Governor Tony Evers has appointed former State Treasurer Sarah Godlewski, who lost a bid last year for the Democratic U.S. Senate nomination, to the post. Godlewski will serve out the remainder of La Follette’s four-year term.
