OSHKOSH, Wis–The Oshkosh Area School District is changing its plans for a consolidated middle school on the south side of the city. The district is giving up on the idea of building a new, larger South Park Middle School and instead rebuilding at the Jacob Shapiro STEM Academy site.
The expansion of South Park was called into question last month, when the district discovered the site lies in a new zoning designation for Wittman Regional Airport that explicitly bars construction of a school. The district had spent more than $800,000 in purchasing homes surrounding South Park.
The use of Shapiro for a middle school site has the district relocating its planned pre-kindergarten center to Perry Tipler Middle School instead. The Oshkosh School Board will discuss the proposed changes on Wednesday night.
