The Vandenbroek-Kaukauna department’s main fire engine caught fire at the station along Highway JJ yesterday afternoon.
Fire Chief Ron Young says the call came in as a vehicle fire in a building, and then they quickly realized it was at their own station. He says it was a little unique, and they’d never expect to have to put out a fire at their own station.
Young says the engine is a total loss, and they have a backup at their other station. Another vehicle was also damaged, but the flames didn’t spread to the building.
Young says nobody was there, and the garage was locked. He says they’re not sure how it started, but the state fire marshal is investigating.
One of their own firefighters actually called in the fire, after seeing smoke while going past the station.
