A study by UW-Oshkosh shows manufacturers in Wisconsin are feeling more confident about their long-term viability.
Jason Woldt of the business school says they’re also trying to save money, by reducing their payroll costs. He says 43 percent are implementing furloughs and temporary layoffs. He says that’s up from 35 percent last month.
Eight percent are eliminating positions.
He believes the federal Paycheck Performance Program helped manufacturers keep workers on the job, earlier in the pandemic.
Woldt says the number of companies that expect to be viable in 10 months more than doubled, compared to last month. He says the total went from 22 percent to 48 percent.
The survey also found 89 percent of manufacturers applied for federal help last month.
