APPLETON, Wis–One of the oldest businesses in the Fox Valley is closing. Courtney Woolen Mill in Appleton will be ending operations soon. The mill was originally built on East Water Street along the Fox River in 1880 by the Kelley family. The Courtney family purchased the business in 1904, and have been running it ever since, selling quilts and wool batting.
Current owner Tom Courtney is retiring and has not found someone to take over operations. The mill was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1993. The building is for sale.
