As a member of Gen Z, I am NOT looking forward to the debate tonight. I do not think we will learn anything new, and I think it will be kind of a waste of time. I had this conversation with Ben today on the recurring Thursday segment “A Gen Z Perspective” on Outside The Box.
Because both presidential candidates are utilizing social media to share their views and opinions, I think we all know how Biden and Trump are going to answer various questions. I do believe it is important for the candidates to debate on live television so we can hear what they have to say and see how they hold up under pressure; however, I do not think it will be very likely that we hear something tonight that surprises anyone.
We know from Biden’s social media posts that he will show support for abortion; this will certainly rile up his base.
Similarly, we know Trump is a funny guy, and he’s quick with comebacks and remarks, so this debate will certainly rile up and strengthen his base. Many of Trump’s social media posts have been directed at Joe Biden such as “Drug test for crooked Joe Biden? I would also immediately agree to one” and another with a photo of Biden tripping and a caption that defines “cheap fake” as “any unedited video of Joe Biden’s cognitive decline that the Biden administration does not want the public to see.”
I should hold out hope for surprises tonight. Maybe one of the candidates will say something surprising, or even better, maybe they will be asked some outside-the-box questions.
Whether this is on the docket tonight or not, I would love to hear our candidates discuss the rising costs of housing, our struggling education system, or the increasing needs for mental health support for Americans.
I often refer back to the changes Minnesota’s government has been making to their state: the Northstar Promise, how every child gets free breakfast and lunch at schools, and the recent bill that makes straw purchases a felony-level offense. It would be really cool to hear national candidates float similar ideas.

Make sure you tune in to Outside The Box tomorrow to hear Ben break down the contents of the debate!
