APPLETON, Wis–The Appleton Area School District continues to see increasing incidents of seclusion and physical restraint of students. For the 2023-24 school year, there were 347-incidents where a student was placed into seclusion.
There were 121-incidents where a student was physically restrained in the classroom. That is up from 313-seclusions and 107-restraints in the year before. It also marks the fourth consecutive year where those numbers went up. That is despite increased training for teachers and staff to avoid such incidents.
As in previous years, nearly 90-percent of those incidents involved students with disabilities.
