Before the end of the year, Green Bay will have the first researched-based, year-round commercial fish hatchery in the state.
The Farmory is being built in the basement of the former National Guard Armory, at Chicago and Jackson streets in the downtown.
Ken Webb is a researcher with UW-Green Bay. He says the yellow perch hatchery will produce a sustainable source of vegetables and fish to school cafeterias and hospitals. He says those places have a hard time getting a lot of quality food.
Webb says they also want to teach people how to set up a small-scale version of the system in their own basement or backyard. He says they’d be able to produce their own healthy, sustainable food.
