A couple from Green Bay is facing charges for the death of a toddler.
30-year-old Sarah Kairys was the 15-month-old girl’s mother. Her boyfriend, 31-year-old Juan Maravilla, is charged with first-degree reckless homicide and repeated child abuse causing death.
The child died in May of last year. Brown County prosecutors say the couple claimed the girl got hurt falling down the stairs.
Green Bay Police Lieutenant Rick Belanger says when the full autopsy report was released last week they had enough information to make an arrest. He says they were able to interview both people right away and get their timelines down.
The autopsy found old injuries in the process of healing. Belanger says the couple’s story doesn’t add up.
Kairys is charged with child neglect resulting in death and failing to prevent harm to a child.
