The father of Appleton’s police chief is getting some national attention for his volunteer work with the department.
Randy Thomas started helping four years ago, after the death of his wife. He says he’s a people person and needed something to do to keep interacting with others.
Chief Todd Thomas asked his father to digitize old department records that were stored in file cabinets. Randy is a retired manager of an engineering documentation department, and he dove in.
He spends about six hours a day at the police station three to four days a week.
Randy says he sometimes runs into his son in the hallways, and he likes talking with the other police officers and staff.
Former President George H.W. Bush created the Point of Light award, and a foundation recognizes someone every day.
