Warm Fox Valley Welcome

I'll be honest with you.
Moving has been a long, difficult haul.

First of all, there is the matter of packing up 22 years of 'stuff' into boxes and slogging your life up to a new location. Then comes unpacking all that stuff, a process that is still playing itself out.

You leave behind all the friends and family you've gotten used to having around for a few decades and hope for the best in your new location.

Last night I experienced some of that 'best' when I returned home from the radio station, and I wanted to share the experience with you.

Listeners know that my wife Sandy (Mrs. Biggest Name) is not here yet with me. It's just my dog Gabby and me until September when Sandy is finished with her current job. Last night I had two appointments dropping over to the house and the plan was to perhaps make a frozen pizza for dinner late in the evening.

However, that plan changed when, as I got out of my car a new neighbor I had not yet met walked across the street with a big box and a bigger smile. The box contained all kinds of home-made food, a veritable picnic featuring grilled brats, beans, potato salad and more. It was like I struck gold. Food. Real food! The frozen pizza would remain frozen.

She introduced herself to me and pointed out there were even treats in the care package for Gabby.

But as excited as I was to meet a great new neighbor bearing edible gifts, here comes what really mattered to me. It was as if she knew me, like we were old friends. Why? Because she's a listener. She knew all about the PhilCast show, telling me how I make her laugh every afternoon.

"I brought you some real food 'cause I know Mrs. Biggest isn't here yet with you. And there's something for Gabby in there too," she said.

All this simply means I'm doing my job on the radio. I've always believed a radio talk show should be like a conversation between neighbors on the front porch. It's just my style. And yesterday's meeting with a friendly new neighbor is proof to me that it works.
