Remembering "Junior"

Sunday, Apr, 13 2014

A face from my past came back into my life suddenly on Sunday afternoon when I received an email from a distant relative. "Junior" had died last week.

If I look closely at his face I can see my grandma, who raised me in West Allis. If you read the obit of Fred Stoll (click here) you will see that he had a sister named Dorothy Trokan. That was my grandma.

Jr. lived 'up north' from me when I was a kid, but I remember several visits in West Allis when he and my grandma were always joking around. They both had a quick wit and a sense of humor, always at the ready with a bad pun or two.

So in a way I think that is where I must have inherited the sense of humor I have been able to use to make a living.

Maybe it all started here with "Junior" in my blood lines. I wonder if he and my grandma are up there somewhere now cracking jokes together again?

The "Champ's" Shirt

Friday, Apr, 11 2014

Sure, the Masters has its "Green Jacket", but we here at the PhilCast have our "PhilCast Bracket Challenge Champ's Yellow Sweatshirt"....and there it is.

Congrats once again to Alice, the best of the best when it came to filling out our brackets this year.

Alice was also lucky, because three people tied for total bracket points, and Alice's name was drawn at random as the winner.

Thanks to all for playing.

Alice, when the shirt arrives I'll be expecting a picture of you wearing it with a smile in my email.

We'll do it again next year.

In the meantime, enjoy the bragging rights Alice.

The new John Lennon

Thursday, Apr, 10 2014

There is a dentist who has paid a lot of money for one of John Lennon's teeth.

This is not just something for a dentist to have in his collection. No, this is a dentist who wants to be able to someday legally pull DNA from the thing and make his own John Lennon clone.

Okay, that's normal.

I'll have more about this on the Thursday PhilCast. Weird yes, but it got me to thinking about whom I would want to clone among the many famous dead people out there.

We'll discuss.

Brewers Tuesday

Tuesday, Apr, 8 2014

A late-afternoon Brewers' game means no PhilCast Tuesday afternoon...which means I can sneek out to get my annual new pair of tennis shoes, which I normally buy on Opening Day for some reason.

Coming up on the Wednesday show....
The second-to-last "Weigh-In Wednesday" segment.

Also, a visit from 'Ernie the I-T' guy to walk me through the pitfalls of Microsoft ending all support for Windows XP, which IS indeed what I am running on an old laptop at home.
