Doc Rocks!

I'm in awe actually.
How in the world can that guy be 86 years old?

Last night Doc Severinsen put on one heck of a holiday show at the Appleton PAC. But as good as the music sharp as his clothes bright as his personality was...overall I was most impressed that this was an 86-year-old man on stage not missing a beat!

Most 86-year-old men I've known find it a chore just to walk upright.

Doc was up and down that conductor's stand, blowing his horn with wind to spare. Sharp as a tack, he joked when a couple of people were seated late. He was engaging, funny, and the music was beautiful.

And then the outfits. Oh the outfits. That hasn't changed from his Tonight Show days. He came out in green leather pants with a wild jacket on, one he said he picked up at the Vatican, made out of the Pope's old shower curtain he claimed. The audience ate it up. It was like visiting with an old friend. After intermission it was red leather pants and a white sequined jacket. How many 86-year-old men do you know who could pull that off?

After the show Doc visited the PAC lobby, where he personally signed CD's people had purchased. ALL of them, and there was a long line.

I have not stood in line to meet someone for a long, long time. But last night I did just that. I bought a CD and asked him to sign it to Ali, Mrs. Biggest Name's niece in LA who teaches music. I think it will make a great Christmas gift to her.

Me: "Great show Doc. I grew up watching you in my living room every night."
Doc: "Thanks. I get that a lot."
